In 1911, J. Smeaton Chase, embarked on a journey across the length of the Western United States.

Traveling upon horseback he spent the next two summers venturing along the coast from Mexico to Oregon.

His fascinating California Coast Trails record in impeccable detail those journeys.

Riding through this spectacular landscape Smeaton Chase immerses the reader in the beautiful cañons, the varied and stunning flora and fauna and the captivating people he meets along the way.

The first section of his journey takes Smeaton Chase from Los Angeles to San Diego, accompanied by his reliable horse Chino and his friend the painter Carl Eytel. The next year Smeaton Chase explores the northern section of the Western United States through Oregon.

California Coast Trails is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of the western coast of America in early twentieth century or anyone wishing to take their own journey along the route that Smeaton Chase took over one hundred years ago.

“The high point of the book - as it was the high point of his paseo for Chase himself - is the Santa Lucia Mountains and the Big Sur Country. Even though Chase saw it as we never can, before the highway, when the land was still dotted with isolated ranches accessible only by trail, before tourism, exclusive resorts and the advent of the weekend backpacker had made their numerous marks on the land and on the spirit of the place - even with all these changes, those who travel the backcountry can still see this truly magical place much as Chase saw it.” The Double-Cone Quarterly

J. Smeaton Chase was an English-born American author and traveler. He has become an integral part of California literature revered for his poignant descriptions of landscapes. He died in 1923. His book California Coast Trails a Horseback Ride from Mexico to Oregon was first published in 1913.

California Coast Trails; A Horseback Ride from Mexico to Oregon eBook J Smeaton Chase

I have always wanted to drive Highway 1, the coast highway, but never had the time to do it properly. Reading this book makes me feel like I have traveled every mile and became acquainted with all the scenery, flora, fauna and history of its entire length. What's more, instead of making me feel like that dream can now be taken off my bucket list, I am all the more interested in doing it in person. Plus the author has pointed out several locations along the way that I also want to see, but never heard of until reading this book. Horse lovers without an iota of interest in California geography might still enjoy it because he includes the horse he is riding in much of the commentary.

California Coast Trails; A Horseback Ride from Mexico to Oregon eBook J Smeaton Chase Reviews

This is a great book full of descriptions of early Southern Ca...well written and quite interesting, a classic and great for Ca historians
I have an interest in early California trails. It is very interesting.
Hard to imagine a California where you could ride a horse from the South border to the north border. Author does a wonderful job explaining the experience, the fauna, topography, towns and people. The language is exquisite.
Great vision of the California coast before it became The Peoples Republic of Kalifornia.
California long ago, was a paradise. Mr. Smeaton and a friend went south-to-north on horseback without hurrying. I could only wish that I could have participated.
2nd time I've read it (along with Brewer's " Up and Down California 1860-1864") and still rank it among favorites of all time. I'm 5th generation Californian and have travelled many of the places described not all that long ago. What a contrast, though the natural history persists in many places.
A fascinating read for a California native. Many of the places he visits are now historical sites, many others have disappeared altogether, and almost all are located along 101 and Hwy 1.
